Case Study

Recently, i had found a Articulate blog called World of Mouth. It is talk about web-publishing, software support experience and also information about e-learning. One of the post is talk about a professor from Miami University, Ohio - Middletown campus. The main subject she teach is physics courses. She holds an undergraduate degree in physics and a master degree in education. She tend to change the way of learning physics.Miami University was invited her and the Center Online Learning (CoOL) to assist the distance learning courses of school of nursing.

The nursing school needed to build up activities immidiately for associate the degree nursing student who were searching for bachelor's degree in nursing. In this situation, most of the nurses are working , and their working time sometimes is different with others. So, attending a normal lecturer class tend to be a problem for them. The evaluation team, led by Hurn, has recommended Articuate Rapid E-learning Studio as the technology to assist creating the online courses.

Says Hurn:
Our lectures were PowerPoint-based, so Articulate Presenter was a natural fit. The fact that our instructors and course authors could work within PowerPoint and easily enhance the courses for online learning was exciting in and of itself. But when we realized we could easily create and add engaging quizzes with Quizmaker and impressive interactions with Engage, Articulate Studio Pro became a no-brainer.”

She now holds class two days a week and creates and e-learning course that students review over the weekend. The Monday class begins with a quiz. Students can use notes they took from the online course and answer questions via a real-time response clicker. Based on instant results, Hurn is able to customize her Monday review session based on areas that need additional attention.

Following is Articulate-powered presentation about Hurn’s favorite features of Studio-09:

case study
You can view this link according to following link:

http://www.articulate.com/blog/demos/Miami-University/player.html

The results have been excited. Hurn has observed the following:
-She can able to deliver a lecture in a 15-minute e-learning course instead of took one hour in a classroom lecturer who need to waste one hour.

-The Articulate-authored courses provide for easy navigation and allow students to repeat sections or even skip sections altogether. This allows students to learn at their own pace.
Class time can be used for more lab-oriented or collaborative activities.

-Some lab demonstrations are difficult to reproduce. She purchased a Flip Video recorder and records her lab demonstrations. Then, using the Articulate Video Encoder ‘09, she converts those videos to a Flash Video (FLV). Now she’s able to introduce the labs whenever she wants into the Articulate courses and quizzes.

-Using LectureScribe (a free software product developed by Brian C. Dean, Clemson University) and her tablet PC or Wacom tablet, she’s able to work through equation examples and easily insert them into Articulate courses. Some students will need to go through this once, but others may need to go through it multiple times to understand it.

-Student satisfaction and performance have improved: 88% of students agreed that the presentations were helping their learning.

What’s next for Hurn?
“I continue to challenge myself to improve my teaching approaches,” Hurn says. “I really want to improve the quality of my e-learning courses, and I’ve become a real fan of the Rapid E-Learning Blog.”
Her success has motivated others at Miami University to follow her lead. A mandatory safety training course was created in Articulate by colleague Andrea Han so that all staff could review it.
The university is now looking to hire a full-time director of online education. Is Hurn interested in applying for that position?
Says Hurn:
“I’m an educator at heart. So I’m not going to apply for that position. But, I’ll continue to explore ways to make physics easy to learn and work with other interested faculty. And, I’m certain that e-learning and Articulate software will continue to play a key role in that ongoing journey.”

After this article, i had found that e-learning is really helpful for nursing programs. This brings a lot of convenient to the students and absolutely for the lecturer. Although there is not face-to-face interaction, but the student and lecturer also can discuss their problem via many social network features. I believe that people will change their opinion about e-learning. please kindly leave a comment , thx :)

Analysis of the poll 3 result

What personal qualities and values does anyone need to become a successful e-students?

The poll 3 results states that 45.5% of people have agreed that highly motivation is the main requirement to become a successful e-student, while 27.3% of people think that stress management will be the appropriate personal qualities and value to become a successful e-students. Moreover, 18.2% of people think that self-confidence is the most suitable qualities and value to become a successful e-students. Besides that, 9.1% of people think that a successful e-student should able to manage paperwork and there is 0% of people think that intelligence will be the appropriate way to become a successful e-students.
poll 3
From the result of the analysis, it is clearly shows that high motivation is the most appropriate personal qualities and values to become a successful e-student. A student who choose e-learning should have highly motivation to continue their studies compare with student who study in college or university. The main reason they choose e-learning is they lack of time to college, they have to work, they can't afford to study at overseas and they have highly motivation to upgrade their studies even they know e-learning need to put more effort compare with the normal students who study in college or university. This is why highly motivation is the most important values a e-learner should have because you are working alone and you must be able to work independently.

Besides that, stress management is also the main requirement to become a successful e-students. This is because e-learning has not fixed time classes. Students should have the ability to manage their time so that they can study with convenience and flexible.
Students should have self-confidence to their own decision in their studies because the lecturer or instructor will not always lead you or help you for your decision making, so you must have confident to think carefully with your subject and able to manage the paperwork without the face to face interaction with lecturer.
Intelligent is not a main values to become a successful e-students. A student who only have intelligent but not hardworking would not become a successful and responsible e-students. I think this is why people agree with intelligent is not a important qualities and values to become a successful e-students.

Are You Cut Out for Distance Learning?

Online distance learning is obviously not for everyone. You are not suitable to choose e-learning if you need to face to face feedback from your lecturer or teacher and if you need interaction with fellow student in order to successful for your studies. Furthermore, taking an online classes will be working alone at your computer workstation, although you do have some interaction via electronic communication links, but it is different as face to face interaction and feedback. So, taking online classes take a lot of discipline and ability to work independently.

There are some web-based resources available to help you decide if you are cut out for online distance education. You will have the opportunity to take some online quizzes that can tell you more about the possibility of your online success. There is also some methods for evaluating distance learning programs.

1. About.com site, in the Distance Learning section, is an suitable place to start investigating what it takes to be a successful online student, as well as what you should know before enrolling in any online courses.

e-learning Here is how to get to About.com Distance learning section for help in determining whether you are cut out to be a distance learner:

i. Point your browser to http://distancelearn.about.com/education/distancelearn/mbody.htm

ii. Click the Student Resources link in the bottom half of the left sidebar

iii. Start your research by clicking the Are You a Candidate for DL? link.

2. The second sites to introduce is Illinois Online Network (ION) Web Site. ION has provide a link of "What Makes a Successful Online Student?".ION is a partnership of thirty-one community colleges and the University of Illinois working together to advance utilization of Internet-based instruction and service throughout the state of Illinois .

3. If you are interested to read timely article about higher education distance learning, go to the Chronicle of Higher Education's Distance Learning section at www.chronicle.com/distance

In my opinion, the both sites will let us know more about how e-learning works and the studies strategies. Besides that, it's also help us to know are we suitable to take e-learning or not? This will help us to choose the most suitable way to continue our studies.

It's Dot edu, not Dot com

All degree institutions of higher education learning have Web sites, but their URL (it's also call domain names) are not dot coms. As a reminder, URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator and is a Web sites global address. The URL suffix(also called TLD for Top Level Domain) for colleges and universities worldwide is .edu.

You can find the college or university that you interested easily by entering the school's name into your selected search engine. You will see the .edu suffix in your search result. :)

Advantages of E-Learning

In this Title, we will talk about the advantages of E-Learning .
The web is the world's library. It's easy to use, easy to update, and universal in its availability, it's leads to the knowledge economy, and because of this, it is a best way for learning.
By combining the latest technology and new thinking of the Internet on how people learn, E- learning let us study with convenience and more flexibility.
Below is the 6 major advantages of E-Learning

1. E-Learning lowers costs
E- Learning is the most cost-effective way to deliver the instruction or information, and to train the students. It cuts travel charges, reduces the time it’s take to train people, and it’s save the need for a classroom/ lecturer transportation.

2. E- Learning enhances business awareness
E-Learning can reach an unlimited number of students at the same time. This is important when business practices and capabilities have to change fast.

3. Content is more appropriate and reliable
Because it’s Web-enabled, e-learning can be updated immediately, making the information more accurate and useful for a longer period of time. The ability to upgrade e-learning content easily and quickly, and then immediately distribute the new information to large numbers of students. This makes student’s study with more flexibility and gains the correct knowledge at the latest time.

4. Learning is 24 hours
People can access e-learning anywhere and anytime. It’s makes an organization’s learning operations truly global.

5. No user “ramp-up” time
With so many millions of people already on the Web and comfortable with browser technology, learning to access e-learning is quickly becoming a non-issue.

6. Scalability
E- Learning solutions are highly scalable. The programs can move from 10 participants to 100 or even 100,000 participants with little effort or incremental cost.
